Step into a healthy lifestyle From coast to coast, Americans are taking steps — literally — to increase physical activity and improve health when they participate in walking activities.
National Start! Walking Day, in its fourth year — included more than 3.2 million people representing about 1,300 companies — and is sponsored by the American Heart Association as part of its Start! initiative. People and companies across the nation were encouraged to take 30 minutes to walk and start on the path to better health. Start! champions walking because it has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. National Start! Walking Day is conducted primarily in the workplace because jobs are becoming increasingly sedentary and Americans are working 164 more hours per year than 20 years ago.
As the local presenting sponsor of the Start! movement, Saint Thomas Heart at Middle Tennessee Medical Center hosted a kick-off walk. MTMC President and CEO Gordon Ferguson, along with myself and MTMC associates, walked the perimeter of MTMC’s campus, totaling about half a mile. The prospective, randomized trial initially evaluated 198 patients who were at least 18 years old and clinically obese, but otherwise “healthy”.
