Step into a healthy lifestyle From coast to coast, Americans are taking steps — literally — to increase physical activity and improve health when they participate in walking activities.
National Start! Walking Day, in its fourth year — included more than 3.2 million people representing about 1,300 companies — and is sponsored by the American Heart Association as part of its Start! initiative. People and companies across the nation were encouraged to take 30 minutes to walk and start on the path to better health. Start! champions walking because it has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. National Start! Walking Day is conducted primarily in the workplace because jobs are becoming increasingly sedentary and Americans are working 164 more hours per year than 20 years ago.
As the local presenting sponsor of the Start! movement, Saint Thomas Heart at Middle Tennessee Medical Center hosted a kick-off walk. MTMC President and CEO Gordon Ferguson, along with myself and MTMC associates, walked the perimeter of MTMC’s campus, totaling about half a mile. Last month, I was invited to join the Star Magic run. More than 100 celebrities from ABS-CBN joined the 3K and 5K race categories. Held at McKinley Hill in Taguig City, the event aimed to empower the Filipino youth in making a difference by having a clean election and making their votes count in May.
During the event, I discovered the amazing secrets of these celebrities—how they stay strong, maintain a healthy body image and positive mindset.
Many of them woke up as early as 4 a.m. to join the 5:30 a.m. race. Most of them even had a hectic schedule the day before.
Enchong Dee, overall winner in the men’s 5K celebrity category, finished in 21 minutes and 44 seconds. According to him, he runs in his village for less than 30 minutes every time he feels like running. This is aside from his major activity, which is swimming. He doesn’t even follow a specific training, but he loves the feeling of being light and sweaty.
